Bound volume, 1852-1865, re Shand's student days at South Carolina College, containing pamphlets with annotations; catalogs, 1857-1860, listing students, curriculum and expenses, with annotations noting alumni killed in the Civil War, with undated newspaper clipping re a drinking song honoring Billy Maybin's Congaree House, a popular hotel; catalogs of Clariosophic and Euphradian Societies, listing members, 1806-1859; texts of speeches delivered by John LeConte, Joseph LeConte, J.L. Reynolds, and others; and address, 1855, delivered by Ja[me]s Louis Petrigru at Semi-Centennial Celebration of South Carolina College. Civil War journal, 12 Oct. 1861 - ca. Feb. 1865 (48 pp.), found on battlefield, recording activities of its respective Union and Confederate owners; brief entries, 1861-1862, of Union soldier Frank Eaton, Co. D, 100th Pennsylvania ("The Roundheads") Sherman's Division, briefly describing camps in Maryland and Virginia; and more extensive writings, 1 Jan. 1863 - 22 Apr. 1863 and ca. Feb. 1865, of Confederate Sgt. Rob[er]t W[allace] Shand. Title page annotated, "Presented to Se[a]rg[en]t. Rob[er]t W[allace] Shand by John R. Osment--A relic from the battle-fields of Fredericksburg [Va.], Dec. 13th, 1862." Also includes organizational chart, ca. 1863, of several S.C. units in the Army of Northern Virginia. [This volume formerly filed as "John Osmut."] Shand's entries, written from vicinity of Fredericksburg, Va., note weather, activities, and rumors re developments in Tennessee, S.C., and various places, including 8 and 9 Jan. 1863, re arrival of a Union officer escorting a lady under a flag of truce to retrieve her husband's corpse from the battlefield; later entries describe Shand's discharge and return to Columbia, S.C.; Shand's entries conclude with an undated list, ca. Feb. 1865, identifying residences, churches, and city blocks in Columbia "burnt by Sherman." Memoir volume, written ca. 1907-1908, titled "Incidents In the life of a Private Soldier in the war waged by the United States against the Confederate States," re his experiences as an enlisted man and non-commissioned officer in Co. C, 2nd Regt., S.C. Volunteers; illustrated with maps and diagrams of battles; topics discussed include happenings in Columbia area during final two years of war, when he served as an enrolling officer under John S. Preston, including removal to the upcountry with his wife and friends to avoid Gen. William T. Sherman's army; visit to Columbia shortly after the burning of the city; his life as a lawyer practicing in Union, S.C., during a period of Ku Klux Klan activity; Reconstruction and the Wade Hampton gubernatorial campaign of 1876; and his account written for The State newspaper, 20 Sept. 1908, "Kershaw's Brigade At First Manassas." Unbound items, 1859-1886 and 1915, include letter, 18 Mar. 1869 (Charleston, S.C.), to J[ohn] Berkley Grimball, re newspaper subscription to the Union Times; letter, 13 Nov. 1886 (Columbia, S.C.), to J[ohn] M[cLauren] McBryde, re gift of books to South Carolina College library by direction of Robert Henry; and incomplete draft essay and typescript, recalling his early years in Columbia, 1846-1866, with references to hotels, schools, churches, public buildings, certain streets, landmarks such as Sidney Park [Finlay Park], and biographical information about prominent citizens.
